Congratulations to Ashleigh on winning a NIMS summer internship award! He is spending 2 months in the group of Professor Yoshio Sakka at the National Institute for Materials Science. NIMS is based in Tsukuba Science City about 45 minutes from Tokyo on the express train and is home to many fantastic institutes and research centres. Ashleigh will also get the chance to work with the groups of Professor Jinhua Ye and Professor Ya Xu, as well as meeting many other new colleagues. It’s a great chance to learn many new techniques and also to sample the Japanese culture!
Having lived in Japan for nearly 2 years from 2011-2012, it was lovely to go back to visit for a week this summer. As well as visiting Ashleigh, I also met with a good friend and collaborator Brian Pauw to talk synchrotron data. Then I was very happy to visit the group of Professor Akira Isogai at the University of Tokyo to discuss a potential collaboration. All in all a very successful trip!
